Review of 61* (2001) by Ric R — 12 Nov 2007
The story of the 1961 baseball season where Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle chased Babe Ruth's single season Home Run record.
Amazing direction by lifetime New York Yankee fan Billy Crystal. Who in every frame recreates the feel of one of the greatest baseball seasons.
Winning peformances by Barry Pepper as the misunderstood slugger Maris and in a brillant casting move Thomas Jane recaptures the magic that was Mickey Mantle. A star that was scarred by not just the pressure of being the face of a team but truly believed that he was living on borrowed time. It is so clear that neither Maris nor Mantle would ever be the same after the 1961 season.
It was a labor of love for Crystal and baseballs fans everywhere should own this movie.
