"13 Assassins" is what most American action movies aspire to be. A methodical build up sets the stage for a dizzyingly dynamic battle scene. When an irresistible force meets an immovable object the result is total massacre.
Director Takashi Miike is an artist whose magnificent unrelenting brushstrokes grace the canvas with ruthless shades of red. It is a masterpiece of carnage that sees 13 honorable Samurai teach 200 misguided soldiers and a sociopathic Shogun the meaning of the word "respect.
