Review of Zabriskie Point (1970) by Tom G — 18 May 2008
A stunningly shot film from Michelangelo Antonioni, much of it set in the arid landscape of Death Valley. The landscape becomes a thing of beauty in Antonioni's eye, with the central scene resembling a fertility rite, starkly in contrast to the dry riverbed and sun-baked hills.
A film about freedom and even revolution - while it starts with the bigger picture of campus strikes, the real revolution is in our two protagonists who effectively throw off the shackles of their ordered lives and embrace briefly the freedom of living for the day.
In a sense their driving force becomes "I want to take risks". All this and a cacophonous ending that begs it's audience to stand up and cheer!
