Review of Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession (2004) by Bill B — 08 May 2011
There are some times I feel I missed my ship, that I was born just a little too late. After watching Z Channel, I felt that way. Half of this fascinating documentary looks at the first 'film channel' and its eclectic independent spirit (that even effected modern day filmmakers like Tarantino).
What I wouldn't give to have a channel now that is so dedicated to bringing 'good cinema' to the the masses. The other side of this film looks at the reason behind the channel's success, the tragically brilliant programmer Jerry Harvey.
What he did reminds us of what all the money and corporate panels in the world can't do -- it takes only one person with a vision and passion to make something that is brilliant, just like a good film.
It's too bad there aren't more things out there showing what art really is in this corporate driven world. I guess 'Z' really was the end of independence in Hollywood.
