Review of Yield to the Night (1956) by Tara H — 14 Mar 2016
This is an excellent British crime movie from 1956, the story of a woman condemned to death - loosely based on the case of Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in England. J. Lee Thompson's direction is spare and unflinching, with an extraordinary lead performance from the often underrated Diana Dors.
The rest of the cast is largely female, and the relationships that develop between the prisoner and her captors, notably Yvonne Mitchell, are both moving and unsettling. An intelligent, balanced take on the death penalty, a snapshot of its time and yet still highly relevant today.
