Review of XXY (2007) by Janet Y — 25 Nov 2007
All told, a well-executed exploration of the hesitations and complications of puberty, and not only through the coming-of-age and coming-to-terms-with-queer-identity of its protagonist, Alex (Ines Efron), but also through their effects on the lives around her.
While the action pulls no punches and is at times difficult to watch, the developments in character they cause are representative, nuanced and complex. No themes here will come as a surprise, but they are maturely handled, and their presentation, refracted and multiplied in network of lives here, are original and poignant.
Well worth a watch.
