Joan Chen directed this China-banned drama, based on a novella written by Chinese author Yan GeLing. A simple but moving story of a teenage girl (Xiu Xiu, played by then teeanger Xiaolu Li) who was sent down to rural China for reeducation.

During her stay hopes to return home grew stronger as she turned to desperate measures in return for false hopes and comforts that she would be home soon. Her only comanion throughout her entire stay has been the only one who can help her on her journey home.

Note for the captivating screen shots as well as original song "Whispering Steppes" sung by Chinese diva Chyi.
