Review of Wild Reeds (1994) by Nishlank J — 20 Feb 2013
A tender and beautiful coming of age story, the Wild Reeds referred to by the title are three young boys attending a boarding school in France in the early 1960s and the daughter of one of their teachers.
They bend like reeds in the emotional storm of adolescence as well as the contemporary violence in Algeria which affects them. These characters really come alive on the screen while they deal with school, death, and their sexualities but they also have a good time going to parties and dancing to the Beach Boys.
This is a moody and engaging film about youth, honest and true as only the French can make them.
