Review of Whole New Thing (2005) by J M — 30 Sep 2007
Sometimes I like to rent random movies I've never heard of. The gamble rarely pays off, but this time it did. I loved this warm, sweet film about a very bright 13-year-old, just entering puberty, who is suddenly thrust into a public middle-school after having been homeschooled all his life.
He quickly develops a crush on his gay male English teacher (eerily familiar experience for me). It's not exactly a comedy, but it manages to be light even as it deals with heavy material. Aaron Webber, who plays the kid, did a fantastic job; I never would have guessed it was his first film role.
