Review of Wetlands (2013) by Sönke O — 25 Feb 2018
A film most deserving of the ol' proverbial car-crash saying. This German comedy is graphic and vulgar in the most unabashed way, and filmed primarily in close-up shots to get full-use out of your barf-bag.
At times it seems like David Wnendt is primarily interested in making a film with a stream of gross-out scenes more uncomfortable (and hilarious) than the last, but alas there's too much heart here for that to be the case.
Underneath its sticky exterior, Wetlands is a film about growing up, and the agonizing desires that we all have, all communicated through star Carla Juri's immensely brave performance. Don't take your grandma to this one, but gags-that-make-you-gag rarely resonate as sweetly as they do in this movie.
