Review of West Beirut (1998) by Kevork O — 31 Mar 2013
Lebanese filmmakers tend to ignore the touchy subject of the country's long-running civil war - too many hot potatoes. Doueiri presents it through the eyes of three teenage friends, combining their young sense of wonder at a an increasingly absurd world with a distinctly comic storytelling style.
As the realities of war gradually catch up, the film ends in inevitable - and beautifully conveyed - tragedy. Watching this was LONG overdue.
