Review of Viy (1967) by Joe A — 29 Oct 2010
Russian film is more of a spooky fairy tale then a horror film as it tells the story of an arrogant young monk who encounters, and in fear, beats, an old witch who then, near death, transforms into a young girl.
In a horrifying turn of events, on her death bed, she requests the monk to preside over her corpse during the wake. This means he must spend three increasingly scary nights alone with the vengeful young witch's body.
The visuals are worth watching this for by themselves and the film uses them to create some haunting sequences and great atmoshere. Each night with the body is worse then the last and it plays like a story out of the Brothers Grimm as the young monk learns the consequences for his wrongful deed.
This "horror" flick is a favorite and is highly recommended to those who appreciate something different.
