Review of Viridiana (1962) by Lina A — 17 Jun 2008
I can't praise this film highly enough. Let's bookend a couple of things. Franco allowed Bunuel back to Spain to make a film after 25 years. Bunuel gave him this. Franco hated it, a nd Bunuel had to leave again.
Plotted superbly, the auteur makes mincemeat of his two pet hates, the Church and the State and even has a go at the ordinary Spaniards who supported Franco's regime a parallel not lost on me. I have a similar hatred of the working class, my class, in Britain who supported Thatcher to the hilt.
Suffice to say this is Bunuel's most accomplished feature film with a great twisty story, superb acting and a caustic sting in the tale. Perverse as hell, I love it.....
