Review of Vertigo (1958) by Scott G — 12 Aug 2012
"Vertigo" has been referred to many times as Hitchcock's greatest masterpiece. The more times I see this film, the more I agree with this. The first time I saw "Vertigo," I strongly disliked it.
I thought James Stewart was creepy, Kim Novak's performance was stiff, and the overall story was convoluted and uninteresting. After seeing it again, I was blown away by how much I loved it. Stewart's performance as the obsessive Scottie Ferguson is creepy yet effective.
Kim Novak as Madeleine Elster is one of the most significant female performances in Hollywood history. Bernard Hermann's score for this film is one of my favorite film scores in any film ever. And, as always, Hitchcock's direction is nearly flawless.
I won't give away anything about the plot, but seriously: watch this movie. You will not be sorry.
