Review of Umrao Jaan (1981) by Wahida K — 04 Jul 2010
Rekha is magnetic and completely compelling here, and she's very good at inhabiting the role. I bought her completely. The love stories - though I hesitate to call them that - were less convincing, and it isn't apparent exactly why this is so (beyond the: "hey, you are a courtesan, they are paying you .
. . this is going to be a problem!" angle) until the very very very end of the movie. Also, the secondary characters needed some fleshing out, for example Faiza Ali and Gauhar Mirza. But I really liked where it ended up, and the musical sequences are really beautiful.
