Review of Umberto D. (1952) by Joe W — 31 Dec 2008
Terrific film! There were a lot of similarities to Bicycle Thieves; however, it's much easier to sympathize with Antonio than it is with Umberto. He doesn't seem very empathetic towards others in the same situation.
That isn't to say Umberto is a bad person. There are several heart breaking moments. It's sad to see Umberto breaking down and finally stoop to begging. Of course, the final scene is completely heart wrenching.
We are somewhat rewarded with the last shot as in Bicycle Thieves. Beautiful film.
