Review of Twentynine Palms (2003) by Mark R — 08 Jan 2008
A profoundly awful movie filled with great moments and nearly redeemed by some hot sex scenes. Deeply experimental--and admirable-- in the way it attempts to ratchet tension over the course of 100 minutes to shock the conscience in the last 5, the film nevertheless commits the cardinal sin of boring the viewer.
It is also naively, and insultingly, anti-American--Joshua Tree as home to joyriding, bat-wielding, ass-raping Bubbas? Whatever. Oh and a note to directors: If you want to ensure that audiences revile your film as pretentious, there is no better way to go than to have the two leads speak to each other in different languages for no good reason.
Still, I love the honesty of certain early scenes, and especially the quick exchange when Katia stops to urinate ("Someday I'd like to see you pee." "No.").
