Review of Tropical Malady (2004) by Ken T — 01 Mar 2010
With all the "End of decade - best film lists", Tropical Malady is often mentioned and Weerasethakul (try and pronounce that one) is consistently raved about in regards to a new and powerful voice in cinema.
I'm extremely curious about exploring more of his work but I can't say I really "got" this one. A love between two men, told in two parts, the second being even more obtuse and mysterious than the first.
Images of a magical tiger are unforgettable and clearly the film is working on a very dialectical level. Still, it didn't move me the same way something like 'Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East' did.
Or even some of Antonioni or Tsai Ming-liang's work. That said, I'm game for exploring Apichtang's films further.
