Review of Tootsie (1982) by Layne W — 19 Nov 2008
Perfection. "Tootsie" is that rare movie in which every aspect of its making--the director, script, actors--are all perfectly in place, and the final product is such a sheer delight. The comedy crackles with wit and energy, and the performances are first-rate.
Jessica Lange, great beauty that she is, is positively mesmerizing, but Dustin Hoffman's tour de force is a miracle of acting. His performance works on many different levels, sometimes many levels at once.
You believe him as a struggling actor, a struggling actor playing a successful actress, a successful actress, and a successful actress struggling to conceal her identity as a struggling actor. It's an outrageous, riotous performance with exceptional and considerable skill behind it.
