Review of The Woman Knight of Mirror Lake (2011) by Amy H — 23 Jul 2013
Telling the story of the first female revolutionist, The Woman Knight of Mirror Lake is a strange mismash of a period piece drama and an action movie. It starts out with present day, as Qiu Jin is captured by the oppressive government and flashes back to her early days.
The tone shifts dramatically to and fro, not sure what it wants to be. On the one hand, it has some beautiful scenes of the times and lots of subtlety. Then Qui Jin fights 15 guys and beats them all up, and it feels as if the action scenes were sort of placed in there or else people will get bored.
The fight scenes are fantastic, but do not fit in the heavy handed plot about revolution. The acting is great, the fight scenes too, but the story doesn't know what it wants to be: action movie or period piece drama?
