Review of The War Room (1993) by Stu W — 16 Jul 2008
Coming to this film fourteen years after the fact is probably not an ideal circumstance. I don't mean to suggest that the film has aged poorly, because it hasn't; but after "The West Wing," Pennebaker's de-dramatized style seems to lack pizazz.
Of course, it also exposes the artifice in "The West Wing," but replaces it with something like banality (which is, I'm sure, the point--this review is getting awfully circular). The highlight, though, is watching Stephanopoulos convincing--over the phone--someone who thinks they have a bombshell (pun intended?) to reveal about Clinton that they'll only crush themselves by coming forth.
High stakes political drama, indeed.
