Review of The Slammin' Salmon (2009) by Alexander Z — 14 Apr 2010
It'd be a mistake to compare this to Waiting. Waiting's main goal is to lampoon the restaurant business. The Slammin' Salmon is simply a setting for Broken Lizard to have their characters get into zany situations and deliver hilarious monologues or one-liners.
Now, many comedies try this and fail, due to poor writing and timing, but Broken Lizard gets it right. The writing is strong and the characters deliver without mugging for the camera like some actors tend to do.
Michael Clarke Duncan in particular is the shining star, delivering his lines with such conviction and lack of irony that you completely believe he is as ignorant a character as he portrays. Amazing performance.
Watching him start operating an imaginary turntable is quite possibly one of the funniest ten seconds I've seen in a comedy in quite a while.
