Review of The Shopaholics (2006) by Alexis G — 14 Jan 2010
In 2006 the annual Wai Ka Fai directed lunar new year comedy goes for speed rather than substance, a forceful attempt at overpowering it's audience. Shopaholics sadly soon wears you out with it's fast pace and manages to engage only in it's final reel, when Wai allows Cecilia Cheung and Lau Ching Wan to bring some long lost affection into this romcom madness.
Wai's screenplay includes a hint at social satire attacking the materialism and consumerism in today's China, and the various displays of neurotic behaviour might be mildly amusing at times, but never actually funny.
