Review of The Producers (1968) by Lawrence W — 09 Jul 2008
Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder basically do this film by themselves. Although great minor roles played by Kenneth Mars, the late Christopher Hewett and the late Dick Shawn have prominance, Zero and Gene are basically alone, and they handle it marvelously.
Zero was just coming back from the blacklist, and was an established legend who often upstaged his co-stars. Wilder was a neurotic broadway actor who had only had a minor role in Bonnie and Clyde to his credit. These two elements wouldn't ordinarily mix, but Zero and Gene had great chemistry, and formed a friendship until Zero's death.
See this hilarious Brooks debut film.
