Review of The Last Winter (2006) by Keri W — 27 May 2008
Intriguing, well directed horror film with environmentalist themes. The entire cast is very convincing, with the great Ron Perlman adding another memorable role to his impressive filmography as asshole oil man Ed Pollack.
James LeGros gives an understated performance as Hoffman that really works. The film's atmosphere, reminiscent of John Carpenter's The Thing, delivers a truly intense aura of dread. Director Larry Fessenden certainly took advantage of the artistic opportunities offered by the Alaskan setting, something 30 Days of Night completely wasted.
Aside from some unnecessary, laughable CGI horrors at the film's end that hurt the subtle scares that made the rest of the film eerie, The Last Winter is a creepy little film that fans of the genre who don't mind their terrors understated should check out.
