Review of The Horseman (2008) by Michael S — 14 Jun 2010
Brutal, gutwrenching and emotionally charged, "The Horseman" (the first feature from up-and-coming filmmaker, Steven Kastrissios) is anything but a novice attempt when it comes to its writing, directing or performances.
In short, "The Horseman" does everything right that recent Hollywood "father's revenge" efforts such as "Taken" and "Edge of Darkness" failed to do, primarily by delivering a truly compelling and realistic drama affecting flawed characters that we sincerely care about.
The realistic viloence may be too much for some stomachs, but in a case like this, it's not a cheap gross-out gag, rather it actually adds to the strong emotional element running so strikingly throughout.
A perfect, non-Hollywood revenge tale in the same vein as "Hard Candy" and "The Limey.".
