Review of The Grand (2007) by Alex S — 14 Jun 2008
Combines two of my favorite things: a mockumentary that painfully wants to be Christopher Guest-like and making fun of people who take poker way too seriously. A profound group of talents (Woody Harrelson! Richard Kind! Werner Herzog!!!) all competing in a poker tournament.
That's it. The humor (most of which was improvised as shooting went) is top notch and really, that's what this is all about (the thin story about trying to rescue the Rabbit's Foot casino with the winnings is just blah).
If you have been to Vegas, you must see this. If you have friends who annoy you with their poker love, you must see this. If you have the need to watch Werner Herzog play a character known only as "The German" talk about strangling goats, you must see this.
Easily one of the best sleeper comedies to come down the road in a long time.
