Review of The Dying Gaul (2005) by Mark H — 13 Mar 2008
This film really should be more like 2.5 stars, primarily because the talking directly to the camera to represent internet chatting is a bit of a double-edged sword. It's a bit too arty and much too stagey, but then how else would something so pivotal come across on the screen? The ending is also way too abrupt, trying to make more of an unnecessarily shocking impact.
On the plus side, Peter Sarsgaard makes his character's behavior and personality very believable and the production really transports us back to the days of the internet catching fire in the mid-90s.
(I almost hate to say it, but someone has to - Peter Sarsgaard's orgasm followed by hysterical crying was WAY too realistic for the character and too good for an actor who doesn't always get all the better screenplays out there.
).
