Review of The Decline of Western Civilization (1981) by Blake S — 03 Aug 2009
I don't like Penelope Spheeris at all. I'm giving this documentary 4 stars, not because I thought it was great, or awesome, or any thing like that, but because there is nothing else quite like it.
If you love the Germs and X like I do, this movie is the most you can get out of Darby Crash before it was too late. It also shows you how human the early punks in history were- and not just the actual punk rockers of Los Angeles- in a way that defied all the false assumptions most people had towards punk back then and perhaps just as much today.
I also recommend watching "What We Do Is Secret" (the recent Darby Crash biopic) as a double feature, rather than with "Suburbia" or any of Spheeris' other "Decline" follow ups.
