Review of The Day He Arrives (2011) by Joseph S — 20 Nov 2011
Hilarious! My first film from the director, and definitely a film that makes me want to seek out more. Like The Turin Horse this film was black and white and featured allot of repetition, unlike that film it was funny, warm, insightful, and probing, in short full of life, and the things which make the repetitions of life worthwhile.
The main character becomes less likable as the film goes on, but it's constant tone, of minor details of his voice over, makes the film very novelistic. Like Abbas kiarostami the film carefully constructs its formal patterns into dry humor and witty gags.
the introspective mr. nice guy routine so many films love to flaunt slowly dissolves, as inconsistencies between the things we tell ourselves about ourselves and actual behavior diverge.
