Review of The Cooler (2003) by Ricky M — 03 Apr 2012
A film like this is a little golden nugget that is nestled in a small and special corner of my heart. I've never seen each frame handled with such tenderness, such honesty. A poignant portrait about two people who are essentially down on their luck with the hopes of starting again.
At the same time, we have this side story of a Vegas tycoon, who's essentially in denial that the world that he knew, is crumbling--changing before his eyes and cannot accept it. It would be unfair to say that this film is B movie material, which does trace its roots to 40s noir; but the story in itself, is a testament that Wayne Kramer is one of the industry's underated filmmakers working today.
