Review of The Cooler (2003) by Sarah L — 27 Jun 2010
The Cooler tells the story of Bernie Lootz, a loser who is employed by a vintage-casino manager to bring an end to winning streaks. His bad luck is contagious. The casino manager is played brilliantly by Alec Baldwin, while Bernie is played by William H. Macy.
Things change in the story as Bernie meets Natalie and starts dating her. This shift in the movie's screenplay may seem obvious, but is wonderfully presented, with various unexpected turns.
The film concentrates on its characters, which is why I liked it so much. They feel real, and that's something very few films can argue for.
