Review of The Comedy (2012) by Nick O — 09 Nov 2012
Biggest surprise about "The Comedy": the laughs do more than run the gambit from ear to ear. They stick in your throat and keep coming back. Chalk up director Rick Alverson. Second surprise: Tim Heidecker, TV sketch psychopath-turned-big screen sociopath, who gives the role of yuppy heir with a palate for Brooklyn's finest a fast, ferocious bite of bored and bothered post-hipster hell.
Bullshit? Lock in on that and you might not note the fearless way Alverson plays actors (and non-actors) against type; lets his characters' rants wander until they're tripping over each other; and films Heidecker's slowly spiraling Swanson the only way he knows how to live, foot, fist, and all -- smug, lonely, awash in artificial incandescence."The Comedy" just about glows.
