Review of The Cameraman (1928) by John S — 11 Feb 2012
The Cameraman is my favorite Keaton film. It's hilarious, with some brilliant jokes and gags, and (I feel) is the most and perhaps only Keaton film (that I've seen) that has any real emotion behind it.
His other films are fun and amusing, but sort of felt flat and shallow, but this is the only film of his that I've seen, that really has a connection with the audience. I found myself identifying with the characters, feeling happy when they were happy, and feeling sad when they were sad.
I was cheering at the end, and by the time the credits ran, I just felt great. It's not a perfect film, the story feels a bit dragging, and there are some parts of the film that aren't as interesting as others, but it is a perfectly good time that any fan of Keaton's or of silent comedy will enjoy.
