Review of The Bird People in China (1998) by Melissa B — 13 Nov 2008
Very unusual film from the normally very violent Japanese director Takashii Miike (who made the great but very gruesome Audition). A Japanese businessman, a yakuza and their amnesiac chinese tour guide travel into remotest Yunnan in South-West China supposedly in search of Jade to mine but find a myth about flying people, a scottish folk song song by a blue-eyed villager and some pretty crazy turtles.
Doesn't quite cohere and you get a feeling it could have used a slightly higher budget but really interesting, well made and with some lovely scenery.
