Review of The Baron (1977) by Keenan S — 15 Dec 2013
The Baron is one of the best film-watching surprises I've ever had. I had never even heard of this weird crime film before, but I absolutely enjoyed it. It tells a story about a man who is willing to do just about anything to become famous and realize his dreams, even if it means getting others hurt or killed in the process of exploiting people.
It's a fascinating character study of sorts and a very interesting crime film since mobsters are also involved in the story. I found the acting to be very compelling as well, especially the performances by lead star, Calvin Lockhart, but also from the villain, played by Richard Lynch who delivers a very chilling and effective performance.
It's a shame that this film isn't more well known because it is a damn good crime flick, and not merely some cheesy run-of-the-mill blaxploitation film that one would believe it is.
