Review of Ten Canoes (2006) by R V — 20 May 2007
This is a truly unique cinema experience story telling at its finest. The film documents Aboriginal culture, history and humor in a way that I have never seen on-screen before. The voice-over narration of David Gulpilil is excellent.
The cinematography is awesome. The film's subtle but powerful political message, that liberalism's "tolerance" must make way for communitarianism's "curiosity" and eventual "understanding" and related "acceptance", is one that should be promoted, perhaps in a new sub-genre of Australian film that tells Indigenous stories.
This flick is full of the dignity of this honorable race of people who have so much to be proud of.
