Review of Tabu (2012) by Dave C — 21 Jul 2013
A gloriously sad film about a Portuguese woman born adrift into the imperial trappings who tragically remains trapped there throughout her life. A number of incredibly powerful metaphors build amongst the innocent and brave emotions on display.
When a foreign and free man ventures into her life she glimpses paradise. But he is a man she will beg never to mention in her lifetime their crimes committed there. Her incredible lifetime is rendered as a bridge between modern-day and old; between what could be 1960, 1930, or 1870 and today; between memory and reality; between empire and post-coloniality.
It seems so absurd at first. Then it seems so real. Amazingly powerful film.
