Review of Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song (1971) by Chris V — 20 Aug 2009
If you ignore the cinematography, ignore the sound, ignore the editing style, ignore the acting, ignore the script and ignore the "plot", I guess you have a good movie. but seriously, im not gonna say I understand what impact the movie had when it was released.
..im a white kid from the suburbs, I have no idea...but I understand the cultural impact, the fact that it was a movie with an all-black cast (except the white villians), I understand it was edgy and shocking to have a cop-killer/porn king/anti-hero.
..so really, you gotta give Van Peebles credit for going out there and making a statement, even if that statement was sorta garbled by technological drawbacks.
