Review of Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971) by Tom C — 03 Nov 2009
AWESOME film set in London in 1971. One of the first movies I think to portray homosexuality so frankly and as such was controversial for the time. SBS stars the ever watchable Glenda Jackson as a career woman who shares her young, male, artist lover (Murray Head) with an older gay doctor (Peter Finch).
Both Jackson and Finch are aware of each other and seemingly content to go along with the situation - just happy to get what they can. Their whole set-up seems to be a hang over from the 60's 'free love' ideal.
The film deals with the nature of love and what some people will put up with in relationships just to avoid loneliness. There are some genuinely shocking and funny moments and Jackson's performance is as usual, stunning.
