Review of Summer Palace (2006) by Rick M — 08 May 2009
This is certainly the most politically, socially and emotionally important films I have ever seen come out of china. I found it honest, frustrating and emotionally draining. it is well worth a watch if you have the time and energy to give.
My major complaint was having so little sympathy for the main character (yuhong), but after two-thirds the way through I began to understand her.
It became more clear when a rather minor character made his feelings for yuhong known by telling her he liked her. she responded:
"why would you like me? there's nothing nice about me.".
"you're different from other women, you know how to make other people love you.".
This is a movie that I probably won't be revisiting anytime soon, just because of the toll it took on my thoughts and emotions.
That being said, this is also a movie that I won't easily forget.
