Review of Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) by Remington C — 04 Nov 2009
What I loved in this film was the blatent irony Mikke was offering. Classic japanese cinema got recycled into American westerns, but non could match Kurasowas Yojimbo or seven samurai. Here Miike has a slight giggle bringing the western back to Japan, playing with all the western cliches but infusing it with Japanese culture.
Its a mess, yes, a headmash, yes but altogether a culteral sarcastic love affair of both Japanese and American cinema and I love it. No wonder Tarrentino wanted to be involved.
