Review of Submarine (2011) by Tracie P — 28 Oct 2011
Submarine captures the idiosyncrasies of being a teenager perfectly. The ups and downs, the awkward moments and confusion between what like is really like and what you think it should be like are all captured through the eyes of Oliver Tate.
Ayoade has made an incredibly self aware film that is everything you could hope for from a film. It's intelligent, witty, depressing and extremely entertaining. All the actors are fully into their eccentric characters that are just normal enough to be your next door neighbour, but much more interesting.
Submarine feels like reliving the teenage years, but from a distance so you can reassess, reanalyze all while being glad that that part of your life is over and comforting yourself with the fact that maybe being a teenager wasn't that bad after all, when it was all ahead of you.
