Review of Streetwise (1984) by Nicholas H — 02 Mar 2009
A forgotten gem of a documentary from the 80s, based on the infamous Life magazine article from 1983. Still as moving and depressing as ever, this went on to win an Oscar upon it's release - deservedly.
The story focuses mainly on a 14 year old prostitute named Tiny, whose weathered demeanor and hollowed features becomes an image that sticks with you. Incredibly, she's still alive and well, one of the few survivors out of the nine teenagers featured in the film.
Harrowing stuff.
