Review of Sonatine (1993) by Branden L — 26 Mar 2008
One of the best yakuza films i've ever seen. kitano is a genius and this film somehow is even more bleak and thought-provoking than "violent cop," kitano's first film. I have yet to see "hana-bi," but now I feel as though I really need to see it.
like most japanese films, this is very slow, but the running time is not to the point where it becomes totally dry. the late middle part on the okinawa beach is very interesting to watch because it changes the pacing of the film entirely.
a mastepiece.
