Review of Slim Susie (2003) by John W — 18 Jul 2010
A great little Swedish film with excellent performances by a cast of oddball characters that might have been plucked from Roy Andersson's Songs from the Second Floor while, at the same time, given a dime-store novel twist.
Malmros's direction is really smart -- e.g, the driving scenes, the flashbacks within flashbacks, great (and sometimes quick) editing, etc. -- and displays a debt to independent cinema, the Dogma 95 tradition, and figures like Tarantino, Ritchie, and Anciano.
All of these elements combine to create a fun, bizarre, creative, and darkly humorous film.
