Review of Silmido (2003) by Michael P — 11 Jul 2007
Derivative of many other soldiers-in-training films as well as _The Dirty Dozen_, _Silmido_ tells the story of a group of criminals and social outcasts recruited to form South Korea's Unit 684, a covert assassination squad with one goal -- to kill the DPRK's leader, Kim Il-Sung.
Ultimately, Unit 684 finds their orders revoked and their lives threatened by the very same government they serve. Loosely based on a true story, and highly melodramatic (as most Korean films are apt to be), the film presents viewers with a gritty, bleak picture of men pushed to extremes and then denied their purpose.
