Review of Sherrybaby (2006) by Paul R — 15 Nov 2008
Nothing new as far as indie filmmaking goes: beautiful person has a problem with drugs and alcohol and repeatedly makes horrible decisions that adversely affect themselves and their family. The difference between Sherrybaby and other nearly-identical indies is the stunning, uncomfortably tragic performance of Maggie Gyllenhaal.
There are moments between she and her daughter that literally made me look away because I was so upset for the broken family. There's nothing new here, but watch the movie for Gyllenhaal alone. Sherry may not be a character you have sympathy for, but the performance insures she's someone you can't ignore.
Strong Recommendation.
