Review of Sherlock Jr. (1924) by Chloe S — 28 Jul 2007
Woody Allen assuredly had this film in mind when he made THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, but how could you top this, or why would you try? The traditional Keaton shtick is abandoned midway through for one of the cinema's first successful attempts at surrealism.
Most films show Keaton getting the girl; here, getting the girl is a fete accompli, and he is left simply to ponder the power and allure of cinematic dreams. Keaton as James Bond cannot be missed.
