Review of Shanghai Calling (2012) by Jimmy C — 25 Feb 2013
I was told at first to not watch it, because it was a copy of another good Asian-American film that came out last summer... I was even told it was not good enough to make it to the big screen and barely make it on VOD.
. But I had to take a look, especially after I found out it indeed made it to the big screen. I lived 3 years in Shanghai and 4 years in Hong Kong.. and watching this movie, and to see how Shanghai's progressed so much, and to see a light hearted romantic comedy made there on an independent movie budget really impressed me.
Bill Paxton was great in HBO's "Big Love" and he does a great job here. Henney does an OK job as the main character, but he's experienced and still deserves the part. Some parts of the movie seem unreal or I feel wouldn't happen in Shanghai.
.but hey, its fiction right? Anyway, an impressive film and Zhu Zhu's great.. and Alan Ruck! OMG! from Ferris Bueller! haha.
